March Upcoming Events

March 2, 2018

What’s happening: Middle States visit, several outreach events, and a faculty retrospective in the Marlin Gallery.

The Marlin Gallery will host an opening reception March 7 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. for Kay’s World: A Selection of Work, 1977 – 2018, which showcases the work of Professor Klotzbach (Arts). The show will stay in the Marlin Gallery until April 6.

Our Middle States team visit is Monday, March 26 to Wednesday, March 28. Reviewers from the team will have a home base in Roosevelt 102 and will also tour the campus and meet with our students, faculty, and staff on the Blackwood, Camden and Cherry Hill locations. You will notice red signs on campus that say “How much do you know?” These signs are strategic and meant to get students to go to a page on our website where they will find FAQs about the Middle States visit.

On March 9 from 7 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., the College will host the S.U.R.E (Students United for Respect and Equity) Summit. The Summit provides youth with an engaging experience focused on tolerance, diversity, respect, and equity through large and small group discussion and presentations. The students will take tours of the campus and attend breakout sessions about college affordability and the registration process.

Type One Nation Summits are single-day, education-based summits hosted by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund chapters throughout the county. They are designed to provide information for people of all ages and stages of type one diabetes and their loved ones. On March 10 we will host a summit from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Connector Building.

The Camden County School Counselors Association will host its annual Focus on Your Future Fair March 14 at the Blackwood campus from 6 to 8 p.m. This program provides the opportunity to meet with over 100 colleges, trade schools, technical schools and military representatives.

We are pleased to announce the return of the 37th Annual Coriell Institute Science Fair on Saturday, March 17. For more than 30 years, Coriell Institute for Medical Research has hosted its annual Science Fair, showcasing the very best of South Jersey’s science programs. Bright young students from Burlington, Camden, and Gloucester counties in grades 6 through 12 demonstrate their passion for science in exceptional projects that span the sciences, including biochemistry, botany, computer science, mathematics, medicine and health, physics, and zoology. Two competitors, an 11th-grader with a winning physical/life sciences entry and an 11th-grader with a winning technological sciences entry, will be awarded two-year scholarships to CCC. From 11 to 11:30 a.m. parents, teachers, sponsors, and friends can visit students and view the projects in the Papiano Gymnasium. The awards ceremony will occur from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. in the Dennis Flyer Theater.

CCC in the Community

March 2, 2018

Learn about community programming and events held this past month, provided by several College employees.

Our Dental Hygiene and Dental Assisting students participated in “Give Kids a Smile Day” on February 2. The American Dental Association celebrates a national day for free dental care to children under the age of 13 on the first Friday of February. Thirty-three children from our community received dental cleanings, fluoride treatment, dental sealants, dental x-rays and dental preventive dental care. Four area dentists came to the College dental clinic and volunteered their time providing free dental care such as: restorations, extractions and medicated fillings. In addition, nursing students offered blood pressure screenings and general health information.

On February 21 the Camden County Mayor’s Association held its monthly meeting on our campus. Don Borden and Julie Yankanich presented ways in which the College can help the mayors serve their constituents and directed them to the website for detailed information. Several mayors reached out after the meeting and asked for a College recruitment table at upcoming community days.

A full schedule of mini-courses has begun at The Center with a record breaking enrollment of 239, which is 54 more than this time last year. Mini-course enrollment continues to increase with each semester. The fifteen-week course, “America and the Middle East in the Age of Terrorism,” includes a five-part lecture series entitled “Terror in the Twenty First Century –Al Qaeda, ISIS and Their Affiliates.” This lecture series has sixty-four participants so far. There are currently 190 people who have purchased a $75 membership for the year and 116 people who have paid $30 for an individual mini-course for the year.

Approximately 150 elementary school children from the Kipp Lanning Elementary School in Camden visited the College on January 27. One of their stops was the Library where they received age-appropriate bookmarks and participated in a scavenger hunt.

Our students and Dr. Galbiati were part of a live broadcast from the Lamp Post Diner this week. Fox Good Day will do

a live remote from the College later this spring.

New Partnerships

March 2, 2018

Partnerships with Raritan Valley CC, Rutgers Division of Continuing Ed, and the Naval Foundry formed.

Through the Advanced Manufacturing Talent Development Center, the College partnered with Raritan Valley Community College and Mechatronics Boot Camp to train dislocated workers using our mobile training lab. We also partnered with Eastwick Hohokus School of Trade to offer CNC/Welding training for dislocated workers.

The statewide Rutgers Center for Off-Campus Initiatives—a component of the Rutgers University Division of Continuing Studies—administers the Rutgers Higher Education Centers (HECs) throughout New Jersey.  The Higher Education Centers are the home of the undergraduate degree completion programs that provide those students who have earned an Associate’s Degree from an accredited community college the opportunity to pursue a Rutgers University Bachelor’s Degree.  Camden County College is proud to announce its affiliation as a Rutgers University Higher Education Center. This will strengthen our existing partnership with Rutgers University–Camden, expand program opportunities beyond Rutgers-Camden to all of Rutgers, and bring additional resources to the operation.  The Division of Continuing Studies (DoCS) will serve as the single administrative point of contact for Rutgers University and Camden County College. This change will allow for better coordination between the various Rutgers entities currently at the Camden County College Blackwood campus: Rutgers University–Camden, and Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences.

The Naval Foundry held a career fair in the gym on February 24. Three hundred people attended and 40 were given tentative job offers and six of those were students from our precision machining and CIM majors.

CCC enrollment increases due to high school programs and online courses

March 2, 2018

Sixty-three senior option students returned to CCC to begin the spring semester. Senior option allows vo-tech students to take CCC classes during their senior year of high school. The students take four college courses and will graduate high school with between 24 to 30 college credits.

During the spring semester, there was a whopping 46% increase in students participating in the College Now program and a 50% increase in courses. These are high school students who enroll in general population college courses on one of our three campuses.

Our Dual Credit Program allows high school students to earn college credit for advanced placement courses that they take at their high schools. Due to the consistent increase in dual credit, our enrollment is now in the positive instead of the negative, with 11,500 students currently enrolled, and more dual credit students continuing to register. The College is making efforts to market to these students through the online high school guidance program called Naviance, as well as through email and direct mail so that we can convert them into full-time students this fall.

Online course enrollment has increased 15% since last year. This area continues to grow as more and more people seek to fit online degrees into their busy schedules.

In addition to our successful high school programs, our Honors Program attracts students as well. The Honors Program is pleased to welcome the second largest cohort in its ten year history. Forty-eight students were accepted, based on their application and academic records.
